Honoring CFA Legacy and Milestones

In 2018, the CFA Board of Directors established the Legacy Committee to recognize and preserve the contributions of its members to the Association on behalf of the concrete foundations industry. This committee, composed of Association leaders, serves as a steward of institutional knowledge, ensuring the continuity of best practices and fostering mentorship for future generations of CFA members.

The Legacy Committee’s mission is to safeguard and cultivate institutional knowledge by both remembering the past and looking to the future. By contributing historical insights and promoting networking, the committee aims to empower CFA members to build upon the foundation of legacy established by their predecessors. Members of the committee are nominated by the Board of Directors, with nominations conducted each spring. The committee challenges the Board, CFA staff and members to uphold excellence in the industry.

At the 2025 CFA Convention (CFACON25), the Board of Directors installed three new members to the Legacy Committee: Lance Jordan of Stephens and Smith Concrete Construction, Mark Saldana of Saldana Concrete, and Van Smith, president of Hudson Valley Concrete Pumping, Inc. Each of these leaders has made significant contributions to the Association and the industry during their time with CFA.

LANCE JORDAN, FORMER CHAIRMAN, STEPHENS AND SMITH CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION

Lance Jordan, retired Chairman of Stephens and Smith Construction in Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., dedicated 43 years to the concrete industry. His service with the CFA Board of Directors came during a challenging period marked by the Great Recession, when the Association faced declining participation and financial uncertainty. Jordan’s leadership provided stability during this time, helping to guide the Association through its struggles.

Jordan’s contributions extended beyond governance. He prioritized active participation in CFA conventions, fostering networking and the exchange of ideas among members. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in addressing workplace safety during a period of increased OSHA inspections, leading efforts to educate contractors on fall protection and improve training programs. His work helped establish a safer workplace and a stronger foundation for the industry.

MARK SALDANA, PRESIDENT, SALDANA CONCRETE

Mark Saldana, president of Saldana Concrete in Rice, Minn., served on the CFA Board of Directors from 2004 to 2013. During that time, Saldana contributed to initiatives including the release of the Cold Weather Research Report and two strategic planning efforts in 2007 and 2012. The latter effort formalized the Association’s mission and vision, which continue to guide its work today.

Saldana’s leadership was characterized by consistency and persistence, even as the owner of one of the Association’s smaller member companies. His company, averaging 20 to 25 employees, exemplified the value of networking and learning from peers. Saldana’s example demonstrated that size is no barrier to meaningful participation and leadership within the CFA.

VAN SMITH, PRESIDENT, HUDSON VALLEY CONCRETE PUMPING, INC.

Van Smith, president of Hudson Valley Concrete Pumping, Inc., brought energy and tenacity to the CFA Board of Directors. During the mid-2000s, Smith helped expand the “Basement from Hell” to what became the “Projects of the Year.” He won this award in 2004 and used the moment to promote the program even further. Smith also led efforts to honor long-time CFA leaders during the economic challenges of the Great Recession, commissioning hand-crafted concrete awards for Executive Director Ed Sauter and Managing Director James Baty.

However, Smith may be best known for his contributions in construction education, which he shared at multiple CFA conventions, including presentations on innovative technology and best practices during the 2007 Convention in Stowe, Vt.
